Thanks, it is frustrating, I am used to my big camera that takes such great shots, so far I am less than pleased with the color or quality on the little camera. At least I am taking pictures, before what I saw was not what I got

I love the picture of her under the newspaper...pretty eyes!

The trick is to not use flash if you can help it...flash + cat eyes = pictures you won't love.

Jen, if you use a lens hood with the flash, would that help not to flash out the eyes?

A lens hood is used when you are shooting in bright conditions...it helps to block out light coming from all around what you are trying to take a picture of. With it on your pictures will be a little less washed out than they might be in bright conditions.

Flash is not always bad but the camera stock lens is just too small and too close to the camera...it is never going to be as good as being able to get pictures with natural lighting conditions. There are red eye settings on all cameras now but that slows down the picture being taken and does not always work either. You can buy a hot shoe flash that is much more diffused light and get better pictures...but its really easy to get great indoor pictures by just making sure there is ample light in the room...turning the ISO up a little bit...and having a steady hand, or tripod or something.

I do use the hood outside but just wondered whether it would help with the flash. I live in a "cave" and have no good ambient light. <sigh> My guys don't go outside so have to fix their eyes with photoshop all the time. I guess I'll just have to try it and see...
